GOLF PICKS AUSSIE PGA / DUNHILL
______POSTGAME______
______AUSTRALIAN PGA______
QUEENSLAND
NEVER GIVE UP!
You are 7 shots off the lead on Sunday morning. Your mind can't help but think about what could have been. About your mistakes. About getting old, or getting home. Greg Chalmers found himself in that situation at the Australian PGA this weekend.
We've all been there. We are worn out from the stress of work. We escape our daily grind and head to the course for a refreshing game of golf. The sun, the grass, ahhh, just what we needed. Three holes later we are 3 over and are about to lose another round to that friend you have never beaten.
None of my picks were in the hunt on Sunday at Dunhill. I deleted that tourney from my DVR and was about to do the same with my recording of the Australian PGA. As always, I fast forwarded through it. Then a familiar name popped up on the leader board. Greg Chalmers, 6 Under for the day (-9) T2.
As exciting as that was, I still had a very slim chance of cashing a ticket with his name on it. He was already on the 12th hole and the leaders were only on the 7th. Do the math. The leaders are at (-10). They are probably gonna shoot at least 2 Under = (-12). What's Chalmers gonna do - shoot (-8). Yes!
Chalmers had a long put on 18 to get in the clubhouse with a 1 shot lead at (-11).
First I have to mention that I want to move to Australia. I am so sick of the negative American Media. The Aussies get it. They applaud athletes - they love the game - the story - not the stats. No mention of anyone's previous failures. Announcer: "No script, no Rehearsals, this is real reality TV".
This final put in regulation would nearly complete a Miracle comeback for the Aussie native. The the stadium gallery was silent and ready to erupt.
He Drained it.
Adam Scott and Ormsby missed fairways and puts to also finish (-11).
Playoff!
OK now I'm excited. Chalmer's been hitting Fairways, Greens and Sinking Pus.
He's got this.
1st Playoff Hole
Not so fast.
Scott - Fairway
Ormsby - Faiway
Chalmers - Bunker.
Luckily the other 2 - 3 Put and Chalmers survived.
That scenario repeated itself for several Playoff holes.
It was nerve racking. He never hit a fairway and escaped by the skin of his teeth on every playoff hole. Ormsby is eliminated on the 3rd Playoff hole.
Then There Were 2
MARATHON
The crowd was electric. The announcers were spellbound. Did the older Chalmers have anything left? Could he outlast or even keep up with the younger, stronger Scott?
His Luck Runs Out?
Once again, Adam Scott's Tee Shot is long and in the center of the fairway.
Only poor Approach shots and missed puts have kept Chakmers in it this long.
On the 4th Playoff hole - Chalmers puts his Tee shot in the Trees.
It was fun while it lasted, I thought to myself. Then he nearly hits the pin from the trees. Bad bounce and he's in the short green side rough. Really? Almost saved it!
But, another 2 put by Scott, Chalmers up and Down to tie the hole
Announcer: "After another great escape - Chalmer's has to be thinking it's his destiny to win this".
8 Playoff Holes!
Chalmers kept hitting Tee shots in the Bunker. Scott smoked his Tee Shots dead center, then kept hitting poor approach shots and missing puts.
The Final Hole
Chalmers 60 foot put. Scott 20 footer. Looks like its over. Then Chalmers burns the edge and runs just 3 feet past. Scott for the win? Down the ridge - Oh No! He cooked it! 4 Feet Past. Scott Misses! Chalmers tap In!
Next time you're 3 down to that guy from work - Never Give Up.

Dancin in the Dark
To avoid an early start in the morning - Jordan and Zach tried to finish in the Dark.
Zach dropped 2 shots, Spieth tapped out on 18 and has an up and down for Par this morning.
This was stupid, Zach left a put 2 feet short. Jordan left a birdie put 2 inches short on the Par 5 17th. On 18 with a muddy chip shot left - Jordan asked the official "What time in the morning 8:15? Official "10:15". Then he stopped. So, they were 2 hours off, when they thought had to get up. It cost him a birdie, and now he still has to get up early. His caddy is his young buddy. Which is cool and "chest bumps" work. But - sometimes he needs to be the boss. With a scoring hole like the par 5 17th ahead - I pick up his clubs after 16 and head for the clubhouse.

NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY
As you know - I've bet on spieth every tournament for a year.
Wasn't going to stop this week. But, with the time difference - the book closed before I could. 2 Under was a Great score in the difficult conditions. Once Jordan took a 2 shot lead - I said screw the $400 I would have won on him. I let myself root for him and enjoy Sunday.
The American fans and media put a lot of pressure on the 20 yr old to win again. Listening to the announcers in Australia - it was like going back in time. No mention of his losses. just what a rising star he is. It was like the middle of last season. Speaking of fans - they do not get many big starts there. The Aussie fans cheered for pars and even misses on the green.
I've said for a while now, that the double bogies and lost leads were in his head. I know now they were. He just needed to feel good about himself and quit worrying about winning. The Australian Fans were nothing but positive. That's all he needed.

Sometimes the final leaderboard - doesn't tell the whole story. With my guys gone - the focus was on my sister. When she placed my bets - told her to put $5 on whomever she wanted. She picked Bello. At 125-1 That ticket was worth $630. On Sunday he was Tied for the lead. As the day began, Bello and Stenson slugged it out on each hole. They stayed tied. Then Stenson pulled ahead by 2 strokes, He slipped and Bello caught him. Tied again. Then Bello pulled away. 2 Stroke lead. My sister wouldn't watch - afraid to jinx it. Told her it was tape delayed and she couldn't. She conceded.
As Bello reached the last few holes - he just needed pars to secure the victory. Then it Happened. He sliced an Approach that looked like it was in the water. It wasn't - but it was on the bank in an impossible position. He could barely reach it, was far from the Pin, and needed a very long - perfect fade to save Par. That's when my sister joined me to watch. I wanted him to take a drop, lose a stroke, and keep a 1 shot lead.
Announcer: "He is so annoyed by his last shot he will probably go for it".
Announcer: "This is the shot that wins him the Tournament"
He went for it!
Hits a long fade - It Hit the Green!
Then bounced and rolled into the water.
Bello Never Recovered.
She was pissed - cursed me for making her watch. Yeah it sucked - but - could have been amazing. Imagine if he stuck it. We would have been jumping up and down and Screaming for Joy - Would have went out for Sushi and Saki Shots - Yeah Over Golf.
I have experienced that High several Times. One of these days - it will go her way and she will finally see why we watch.
Cost: $5
Hitting a Winner: Priceless
Almost Winning: Pretty Damn Entertaining
Thanks Bello!
Win or lose - You Showed Heart - it was Worth the Price of Admission.
Like I Said. The Leaderboard doesn't always tell the whole story.
His name isn't on it. But We'll never forget how close he came to immortality.
And how close she came - to doing a back flip - over a boring little game of golf.
